"She’s always there, she’s always working hard and she always does it with heart, and I don’t think there’s many people who have quite as big a heart as Ann DeMichael,” Town of Hempstead Councilman Anthony D’Esposito said as he presented the Woodmere resident with the 2019 Senior Community Service Person of the Year Award.

The honor is presented annually to an Oceanside or Five Towns community member who has provided support and assistance to senior citizens in the area. This year, DeMichael was recognized for her many services to the Oceanside Senior Center.

“I go get food for them, I cook for them, I help them with anything,” DeMichael said. “If they need a Medicaid application filled out, food stamps — anything like that — I can get it done.”

The award was presented to DeMichael on Monday at the Oceanside Senior Center. D’Esposito and Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder both spoke at the ceremony. They each commended DeMichael’s commitment and value to the program.

“The work that Ann has done for our senior enrichment program here in the Town of Hempstead over the last year has really shown how important it is to provide great services to all of you,” D’Esposito said, addressing the audience.

Ryder also lauded DeMichael. “I can’t thank Ann enough for her friendship, for what she is to the Police Department, and all that she gives to all of you,” Ryder said.

DeMichael was awarded a plaque to commemorate her recognition.

“I am overwhelmed and so proud that I am recognized by all the seniors,” she said. “Some of them I grew up with, and it’s nice that we can hang out together and enjoy ourselves.”
