The inaugural New York Frog Swim kicked off at Pop’s Seafood Shack in Island Park and raised more than $100,000 for the Navy Seal Foundation on Aug. 25.

Oceanside resident Corey Muirhead, along with John Human, Brian Valenza and others, coordinated the event within 57 days, Muirhead said. The gathering attracted about 200 people who enjoyed watching the race and raising money with raffle prizes.

“It was well attended, and we were very happy and excited about that,” Muirhead said. “Navy Seal Foundation is one of the best charities around.”

Navy Seal Foundation offers aid to Navy Seals, Navy veterans and their families, including educational and medical support, professional development, child care, transitional assistance and more.

“When an active duty member leaves home or comes back, it’s a big change,” Muirhead said. “They need to make sure the family is held together during those transitions.”

The Frog Swim is a staple at Navy Seal Foundation chapters in cities across the country, Muirhead noted. Valenza, who is the New York delegate for the Navy Seal Foundation, had attended many of those events and was inspired by the support they garnered.

“We said, ‘if they can do it, we can make it happen here in New York,’” Muirhead said. “It was a great day, we couldn’t have asked for better weather, and it was nice to see the range of support.

“We plan to do it every year,” he continued, “and for it to get bigger and bigger, and to double in participation and funds next year.”
