Nassau SPCA investigates report of headless deer in Barnum Island

A headless deer was found in an overgrown area along Shell Harbor in Barnum Island earlier this month, according to news reports.

Residents found the dead deer in the weeds adjacent to the corner of Georgia Avenue and Nevada Avenue, reports said.

The Nassau County Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals is reportedly investigating the incident as a potential case of illegal hunting or illegal dumping.

On Long Island, deer-hunting season (with archery equipment) runs from Oct. 1 to Jan. 31, and a special season — including shotgun and muzzleloader use — takes place in January, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The seasons are limited to Suffolk County only.

The SPCA did not respond to the Herald’s request for comment.
