Rockville Centre Homemakers continue 'making, doing, giving, supporting'

The Rockville Centre Homemakers tried to boost its membership during one of their meetings last week at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center by showing what they offer to the community.

The group, a non-profit organization, is more than 100 years old, and has about 100 members. The club members, comprising talented women ages 18 and up, meets every Tuesday during the school year to share knowledge about knitting, sewing, crocheting, cooking and making crafts. Gatherings also include card games, book clubs, discussion groups and more.

Karen Alterson, co-president of the group, said they are seeking more younger members, and invited Girl Scout troop leaders on March 12 as a way to show them what the Homemakers can teach them. If they need an idea for a project, for example, “20 women will give them ideas,” Alterson said.

Over the years, the Homemakers have supported Hewlett House, Bethany House, Mercy Medical Center, South Nassau Communities Hospital and other local organizations by making pillows, blankets and scarves for patients, hats for premature babies and donating socks to veterans.

“We’re always making, doing, giving, supporting all these local organizations,” Alterson said. It’s $22 per year to join the group, which she called “the real, live Pinterest.

“People need to make things, do things, they want to know how,” she added. “Come in, the ladies will teach you.”
