Juan Vides from Oceanside defeated his opponent Jack Vobis of Island Park late Thursday night to become the Democratic nominee to take on Republican incumbent Assemblywoman Melissa Miller of Atlantic Beach in November for New York's 20th Assembly District .

By the time all 114 precincts had reported at around 11:30 p.m. Vides had secured 52 percent of the vote to Vobis' 48 percent.

"This is a victory for everyone who has lost faith in government," Vides said in a statement, "everyone who has been left behind by an unfair system and everyone who believes it’s time to end the pay-to-play culture and put community before Albany. As a lifelong resident, I am proud and thankful the voters believed in me and the movement we’ve created. We will push forward and bring about real, lasting change – not just for one group, but for all."
