The gripping story of the martyrdom of the infamous medieval Saint Thomas Becket comes to life on stage, in an operatic production, as part of the Madison Theatre’s Family Series, on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m., at Molloy College.

Created by Bernard D. Kennedy and performed by Long Island Masterworks, with music by Verdi, Gounod, Massenet and others, this adaptation tells the fascinating story of Becket, a close friend of King Henry II. Kennedy carefully selected each aria and chorus from such operas as “Don Carlo,” “Faust” and “Romeo and Juliet,” and then wrote the English text to portray the power, the jealousy, the struggle between church and state, and Becket’s ultimate martyrdom on the altar of Canterbury Cathedral.

Admission is free. For more information, contact (516) 678-5000 ext. 7715 or www.madisontheatreny.org.
