A 35-year-old Far Rockaway man riding his bicycle in Lido Beach on Wednesday, June 15, was critically injured after he collided with a van.

Nassau County police said that the incident occurred on Lido Boulevard at 4:28 p.m. According to detectives, the man was traveling west on his bike — on the north side of Lido Boulevard — when he collided with an eastbound van as the driver made a left turn into the driveway of the Lido Golf Club.

Police said that the bicyclist slammed into the passenger side of the vehicle and suffered a severe head injury. He was transported to Nassau University Medical Center where he is currently listed in critical condition. An update on his condition was not available as the Herald went to press on Wednesday.

“I’m not 100 percent sure if he made it yet,” said Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department Chief Brian Guerin.

He said that the PL-LFD received numerous 911 calls, and the Long Beach Fire Department provided mutual aid. Guerin added that a person at the scene had already flagged down a South Nassau Communities Hospital ambulance on Lido Boulevard that was returning to Long Beach from a previous emergency call.

“It must have just happened in front of him,” Guerin said. “[The ambulance] just happened to be coming back from another run. And one of our guys was in the nearby fire house and another witness ran over and said a guy over there needs an ambulance.”

The van’s brakes were checked at the scene and the vehicle was released back to driver, police said. No criminal charges were filed.

Police said that the investigation is ongoing but described the incident as a “non-criminal accident.”

For more than an hour, the police and emergency response activity created heavy traffic on westbound Lido Boulevard for miles, from Allevard Street to the Loop Parkway exit, Guerin and a number of motorists said.
