Long Beach police are investigating the death of a man who appeared to be in his 60s after his body was found on the beach early Tuesday morning.

According to LBPD spokesman Lt. Eric Cregeen, police responded to the beach at National Boulevard at 6:53 a.m., after a passerby discovered the man's body on the shore and called police.

"The officers arrived and confirmed it was the body of a white male who appeared to be in his 60s," Cregeen said. "We did locate a vehicle that belonged to the man in that general area."

Cregeen would not speculate on the cause of death, and while he said there is currently no indication that it appeared suspicious, the investigation is ongoing. Police are not releasing the man's identity pending notification of his next of kin, and Cregeen said the Nassau County Medical Examiner would determine the cause of death.

"The medical examiner was on the scene, and we're currently trying to determine the cause of death," Cregeen said. "At this juncture, everything is on the table; we don't have anything yet and once we get a hold of the next of kin we'll get a better handle on what took place."
