Posted

Over 400 runners participated in the 25th Annual Robert C. McAvoy 5-mile Labor Day race, held on Monday under beautiful, sunny skies.

The race was in remembrance of an extraordinary Long Beach community member, Robert C. McAvoy. The McAvoy family assisted the Long Beach Recreation Department staff with the raffle and awards ceremony.

The 5-mile course was flat and fast, with the start and finish on the boardwalk at Laurelton Boulevard. After the race, City Manager Jack Schnirman and State Assemblymen Harvey Weisenberg were on hand to welcome the McAvoy family and start the awards ceremony.

There were many outstanding performances in this race. Peter Hawkins, 50, of Malverne, took first place in the wheelchair category with a time of 22:47. Brandon Abasolo, of Long Beach, was the male overall winner with a time of 26:53, and Stefanie Braun, 23, of Dix Hills, was the female overall winner with a time of 31:02.

The Long Beach Recreation Department would like to thank Harris Beach Law Firm, Avalon Bay, Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Citibank for sponsoring this race, as well as the Long Beach Police Department, Auxiliary Police Department and the Long Beach Fire Department for keeping all of the runners safe.

The city’s next race will be the Turkey Trot, on Sunday, Nov. 23. For more information, and for the official results of the Robert C. McAvoy 5-mile Labor Day race, visit longbeachny.gov/rec and click on races.
