FEMA extends Transitional Sheltering Assistance program

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, at the request of the State of New York, has extended its Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program, which allows eligible Hurricane Sandy survivors who cannot return to their homes to stay in participating hotels.

Based on extensive applicant casework, two extensions were granted on a case-by-case basis. FEMA said it will continue to review the remaining 84 households still utilizing the TSA program; some applicants will be extended until Aug. 16, while a second group of households will be extended until Sept. 1.

“The Transitional Sheltering Assistance program continues to be an important resource for the victims of Superstorm Sandy,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement. “Extending this program is the right thing to do for displaced homeowners who continue to pursue stable housing plans for the future.”

FEMA is calling all applicants to notify them of the new checkout dates. The temporary TSA program allows eligible Hurricane Sandy survivors to stay in a hotel for a limited time. The cost of the room is paid directly to the hotel by FEMA.
