Halloween: a relief from real-life horrors

If I had young children, I would preserve Halloween for them. I would begin by shutting out real life for the moment, by turning off screens and bringing hopeful and pleasant discussions to the dinner table. I would make a big deal about Halloween, let them feel a little scared, but mostly safe, let them dress in costume and walk with me, door to door, gathering all the junk food we could.

I would buy a charlotte rouse if I could find one, and we would dunk for apples, damn the water-borne bacteria.
