Ice skating and more in Long Beach this holiday season

The city will establish an outdoor ice skating rink at Kennedy Plaza on Friday, Dec. 5, as part of its annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony.

The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. and feature carolers, hot chocolate, arts and crafts for children, a visit from Santa Claus, and, for the first time, an outdoor ice skating rink. The 20-by-40 synthetic rink consists of artificial ice, and runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with a $2 fee for a half-hour session that includes skate rental.

“For the first time ever, there will be an outdoor skating rink at Kennedy Plaza,” City Manager Jack Schnirman said. “This year’s expanded and enhanced tree-lighting ceremony is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to bring in innovative and family-friendly events, creating exciting destinations and also promoting local businesses, as we are encouraging everyone to check our incredible shops and restaurants before and after the lights go on.”

The event is part of a joint effort between the city and Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, along with sponsors that include the city, chamber, Sustainable Long Island, South Nassau Communities Hospital, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Citibank, PSEG Long Island, and the Long Beach Herald.

Additionally, all in attendance will be entered into a raffle for a free “live” Christmas tree courtesy of Primetime Unlimited.

“The tree lighting and our other winter events serve as great destinations for families during the holiday season, and we are inviting everyone to visit our great local restaurants and shops both before and after enjoying the light display,” City Council President Scott Mandel said in a statement.

The Kennedy Plaza Norway Spruce will be illuminated with hundreds of multi-colored lights and adorned with special ornaments imprinted with the names of people in the city who have gone “above and beyond” this year.

Members of the People’s Church choir will lead the crowd in traditional carols. After the lighting, children are invited to participate in holiday crafts. The event will conclude with the arrival of Santa — with some help from the Long Beach Fire Department.
