Gathering Time
Malverne-based Stuart Markus brings his folk trio Gathering Time to Garden City for an evening of harmonious folk melodies. Markus, Hillary Foxsong and Gerry McKeveny continue are renowned throughout the regional folk scene for their soaring harmonies and dynamic sets that range from sweet and sentimental to joyous and energetic, irreverently funny to heart-stoppingly serious. Their eclectic shows include new twists on traditional folk and ‘60s favorites — and they’ve been known to delight audiences when they sprinkle in their own tunes. They will be debuting songs from their newest CD, their fourth full-length album, Keepsake. Blending many streams of folk, folk-rock, and Americana, Keepsake entwines traditions, weaving together strands of Irish and Appalachian folk, blues, roots country, ‘60s folk and modern singer-songwriters — all in the resplendent three-part harmony. Singer Mara Levine also shares the stage.

On Stage

Die Fledermaus
Adelphi Opera Theatre appears on stage this weekend with Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. Revel in luxurious old world Vienna while enjoying the romance of this charming operetta. Die Fledermaus may be the best-loved work from the Golden Age of Viennese opera. Everything old is new again with love affairs, betrayal, deception, and a battle of the sexes, and a classic hum-worthy score. Its story centers on a magnificent masked ball, given by a Russian prince, that brings together all the main characters in various disguises. The three-act journey from boudoir to ballroom to jail provides ample opportunities for farce and humor, but also for genuine human emotion and a surprisingly realistic view of urban life.
Friday, May 6, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 7, 4 p.m. Admission is free. Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, 1 South Ave., Garden City. (516) 877-4000 or www.aupac.adelphi.edu.
