The Long Beach community will gather on Saturday, Aug. 1, to honor the memory of one of the city's longtime civic leaders.

The third annual Larry Elovich Memorial 5K Fun Run and Walk will kick off at 9 a.m., with the race starting and finishing on New York Avenue, between Broadway and the beach. The event is hosted by the Larry Elovich Scholarship Fund, in cooperation with the City of Long Beach. Elovich, an accomplished attorney who served as Long Beach Democratic Committee chairman and president of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, died in 2012, at age 77.

"We are so grateful to the city and all the sponsors," said Elovich's daughter, Lisa Elovich. "It is a great way to honor him."

Following the race, a memorial ceremony for Elovich will be held on New York Avenue. Lisa Elovich is expecting remarks by some of her father's closest friends, including U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), former U.S. Sen. Al D'Amato and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. She said she is grateful for the community support for the race, which is run by the city, with the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce sponsoring the medals that are awarded.

Event proceeds go to the Larry Elovich Scholarship Fund — and in turn to deserving college-bound students in Long Beach who exhibit strong character and a sense of community, as well as academic and athletic skills.

In May, Lisa Elovich presented $2,000 scholarships to two Long Beach High School seniors, Hannah Sofield and Haley Charschan. Hannah will be attending UCLA and Haley will be going to Penn State.

"He loved the youth of Long Beach so much, we wanted to come up with something to assist deserving students with college costs," Lisa Elovich said.

Registration for the run/walk will start at 8 a.m. at the starting line. Each participant who completes the race will receive a T-shirt and medal.
