The Long Beach Chamber of Commerce is kicking off its first Merchants Week on Friday, Oct. 10, part of an initiative to attract shoppers and diners to town, encourage Long Beach residents to shop local and support the local business community.

The event, which runs through Friday, Oct. 19, will feature more than 35 participating businesses that are offering unique promotions, discounted shopping, free classes, and more.

Additionally, a number of scheduled events are planned throughout the nine-day event, including sidewalk sales on Oct. 11 and 12, weekly deals, family fun events, a late-night shopping event on Oct. 16, and pop-up shops at Kennedy Plaza on Oct. 17. Finally, Merchants Week will culminate with a two-day shopping crawl on Park Avenue, Oct. 18 and 19.

“Long Beach offers a unique shopping and dining experience, whether it be in their fashion, children’s and coastal boutiques, fitness, yoga, spa, cycling and wellness — there is something for everyone to explore and that is why the chamber has initiated this great event to promote these amazing local businesses,” said chamber board member and event Co-chair Trish Daly, a partner at Blue Bungalow.

“This is something that we created to really help the merchants,” added chamber board member and event Co-chair Michelle Kelly, owner of Earth Arts. “The whole idea is to drive traffic into Long Beach, and remind people to shop local. We have a nice mix of retailers and food vendors, and we have quite a few gyms that are offering deals and free classes.”

The event coincides with the chamber’s annual Restaurant Week, from Oct. 10 to 26.

“This will be the biggest Restaurant Week we’ve ever had,” said chamber Executive Vice President Mark Tannenbaum. “We’re doing a full advertising campaign on News 12 throughout October, November and December that is a complete shop Long Beach campaign. The centerpiece of our whole program is Restaurant Week, and the shop Long Beach television advertising campaign, and that’s never been done before.”

Merchants Week also coincides with the city’s annual Fall Festival on Oct. 11.
