Long Beach digs out after the storm

The first major snowstorm of the year temporarily brought the city to a standstill on Feb. 9, and though Department of Public Works crews were out in force clearing streets during blizzard conditions, officials urged residents to use caution due to icy roads on Friday.

City Manager Jack Schnirman said that crews worked throughout the storm plowing and salting the roads, adding that drivers did their part by staying off the streets to ease things for the workers.

The city’s snow emergency was lifted at midnight on Thursday and the total amount of snow was 11.75 inches — at Riverside Boulevard — according to the Long Beach Fire Department. Schnirman said on Thursday that no major accidents were reported.

“Please keep in mind that the roadways and sidewalks will continue to be very slippery over the next few days as temperatures stay in the 20s,” the Fire Department said Friday on its Facebook page. “Slow down, watch your step, get to your destination safely.”

The Long Beach school district was on a two-hour delay on Friday. Additionally, Thursday’s Board of Education meeting was rescheduled for Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Middle School auditorium.

The city’s Youth and Family Services Sandbox program for 3-year-olds was cancelled and the Sandbox 4-year-old program began at the regular time. Children who attend the Lido Pre-K afternoon program were picked up and bussed at their regular scheduled time.

The Magnolia Daycare Center opened at its regular time of 7 a.m.

Early morning care at both Lido Elementary and West Community Center opened at 7 a.m.
