But on Tuesday, FEMA said that as one of the most densely populated areas in the country, New York presents the agency with many unique challenges. The decision to extend to registration period was done in the interest of better serving survivors in New York.

FEMA reminds Sandy victims that they should register with FEMA even if they have insurance. In the event that they later find they are underinsured or have uncovered damages, applying by the deadline may save them from losing out on necessary funds. Through an SBA disaster loan, homeowners may be eligible for up to $200,000 to repair or replace their storm-damaged primary residence, said FEMA in a statement. Homeowners and renters may be eligible for up to $40,000 for replacement of personal property. Businesses and private non-profits may be eligible to borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace storm-damaged property.
