Henrietta Carbonaro, former District 24 Board of Education member and longtime resident of Valley Stream, died on Aug. 5. She was 94.

Carbonaro was born on August 4, 1922. She served on the elementary board from 1974 to 2005, a portion of which she also spent on the Central High School District’s board as president, vice president and trustee.

According to a statement issued by District 24, she served on the board “with dedication and enthusiasm, putting the needs of the children of the district ahead of her own.” Carbonaro was instrumental to maintaining excellent programs, and sought funding to provide services without burdening the taxpayers.

Her efforts earned her the Silver Bullet Award from the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, for her 25 years of service, and she also served on the Nassau Region Parent Teacher Association.

She was married to Robert Carbonaro, who began teaching in the district in 1946 and went on to become the first superintendent. The Robert W. Carbonaro School was renamed after his death in 1969.

Carbonaro is survived by her daughter, Barbara and her son-in-law, Peter DeRespiris.
