Nassau County readies for blizzard

Officials distribute emergency information, announce closings

All Nassau County parks and outdoor ice rinks would close at 4 p.m. on Monday and re-open when the weather allows, announced County Executive Ed Mangano. All regularly scheduled county events on Monday evening and throughout Tuesday are cancelled, according to a county news release. County courts are slated to close at 3 p.m. and remain closed Tuesday, the aquatic center in East Meadow and rifle range in Uniondale are slated to close at 4 p.m, and the Nassau County Correctional Center stopped visiting hours from noon Monday to Thursday morning.

Mangano was set to give a news conference about the county’s snow operations at 12:30 p.m. on Monday in Bethpage.

The American Red Cross on Long Island will open a shelter at 5 p.m. at New Hyde Park Memorial High School, at 500 Leonard Blvd., according to a county news release. County officials are also encouraging the homeless to make use of the county’s emergency shelter relief program, “WARMBED,” during the snowstorm now moving through the region. The Nassau County Homeless Hotline is 1-866-927-6233 (1-866-WARMBED). Social service agency employees will help place homeless individuals and families in shelters between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. Once placed, homeless people will receive help accessing permanent housing solution resources.
