Police investigate shooting at Channel Park

Police are searching for a suspect who reportedly attempted to shoot a man at the Channel Park Homes late Thursday.

Police Commissioner Mike Tangney said that police responded to a reported shooting at 11:26 p.m. No one was injured, and the alleged gunman fled the scene. The intended target is not cooperating with police, according to Tangney.

“There was a shot fired at a person but he’s not cooperating,” Tangney said. “We did recover one shell casing — one shot was reported and we do believe there was one shot — and there is an investigation ongoing.”

The latest reported shooting comes on the heels of two incidents in March, when a barrage of gunfire rang out on East Pine Street, just two days after a Long Beach man was shot and rushed to a local hospital, where he was briefly in a medically induced coma.

Last month’s gunfire was detected by the recently installed ShotSpotter system, which can detect and record shootings throughout the city, and improve response times by directing police to the precise location.

Tangney said that Thursday’s single gunshot was not detected by the ShotSpotter system. Overall, Tangney said that the system, funded by a $500,000 grant, has been an asset.

“It’s been tremendously useful in that it gives us very good locations usually … " Tangney said.
