Prepare for a storm before it strikes

If a storm is severe — which, as we have all learned, can mean a tropical storm whose winds do not attain hurricane speed — you may not be able to ride it out at home. If the call to evacuate comes, resist the urge to downplay it. Take it seriously, and heed it. Get in the car and get out of town. Know the hurricane evacuation routes in your community and where the closest shelters are.

You should have “go bags” ready for every member of your family. They should include:

• A first aid kit.
• Clothing, toiletries and medication.
• Flashlight, radio and extra batteries.
• Raingear, sturdy shoes and protective gloves.
• Personal items, like glasses or contact lenses.
• Any special items for infants or elderly family members.

It’s also important to prepare your pets for evacuation. Not all shelters allow pets, so if you can’t bring them, make arrangements with family or friends beforehand to take them in. And even pets should have go bags, which should contain:

• Food, water, bowls and a manual can opener.
• Your pet’s name, and your contact information.
• Your veterinarian’s name and contact information.
• Any medications your pet may need.
• A sturdy leash.
• Toys and other comfort items, and treats.
• Paper towels and plastic bags for cleaning up after them.

It’s never too early to prepare for a disaster. Thinking back to the challenges you faced during Sandy — or Irene, or the storms that came before — should remind you that it’s worth doing everything you can in advance to make sure you and your family are safe.
