Re-elect McKevitt in 17th A.D.

Tom McKevitt, 45, of East Meadow, is running for his sixth term in the 17th Assembly District. Democrat Matthew Malin, 24, of Seaford, is challenging him for the seat.

The Herald endorses McKevitt for another term. We believe he has a strong understanding of what concerns his constituents the most, including public safety, cracking down on the opioid epidemic and reforming the Common Core State Standards.

As a father of school-aged children, McKevitt understands parents’ concerns about high-stakes testing. Like so many of his constituents, he believes that educators should be involved in the creation of state assessments. He has also said that accommodations must be made for students with learning disabilities so they are not subjected to rigid, generic testing.

As the No. 3-ranking position of the Assembly Minority Conference, McKevitt helps manage all floor activity as well as debates. And he has developed and maintained strong relationships with his colleagues across the aisle to get things done. He also remains active in the community as a member of the East Meadow Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He attends many events throughout the district, and advocates for residents on school district, Hempstead town and county matters.

If Malin continues to develop his ideas, we believe he would make a good elected official someday. We encourage him to stay involved in public discussions. But McKevitt’s track record, and his clear understanding of the issues that matter most to residents, make him the best choice on Tuesday, and we urge voters to support him.
