Ringin' in the Chinese New Year

English as a New Language students at Meadowbrook Elementary School rang in the Chinese New Year with a variety of activities on Jan. 26.

Prior to the celebration, the second- and third-grade ENL classes studied the history of the Chinese New Year by reading stories, taking part in music and dance ensembles, and learning phrases like “gung hay fat choy” (“may you become prosperous”). They also embellished their classrooms with customary decorations for an authentic atmosphere.

As traditional Chinese music played in the background, the students rotated among stations where they created red envelopes containing lucky money, made fortune cookies that held messages of wisdom, and designed paper lanterns in the traditional colors of red and gold.

The students could also take photos in a freestanding photo booth, adorning themselves with props such as dragon masks, emperor hats and hand fans.
