Two pedestrians struck within 24 hours

Two pedestrians were struck on Park Avenue in separate incidents on Monday night and Tuesday morning. According to Fire Commissioner Scott Kemins, both victims were transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The first incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Monday, when a vehicle struck a pedestrian near the intersection of Indiana and West Park avenues. Two volunteer firefighters reported the incident and notified dispatch, and tended to the victim’s injuries, Kemins said.

According to the Long Beach Fire Department’s Facebook page, first responders administered patient care “including advanced patient assessment, spinal immobilization, immobilization of a fractured leg and bandaging of wounds.”

“There were no life-threatening injuries, but the patient definitely needed to go to the hospital,” Kemins said.

And at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday, a vehicle struck a female pedestrian as she walked along Franklin Boulevard and Park Avenue. She was also taken to SNCH with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

In both incidents, neither driver was taken to the hospital and both are believe to have remained at the scene. As the Herald went to press, police were not investigating either incident.

While speeding has yet to be determined as a factor in either incident, the Fire Department urged drivers to obey the speed limit.

Earlier this year, the city lowered its speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 25 on side streets, part of a traffic safety initiative that officials said would reduce speeding and improve overall safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.
