West End Electric Light Parade kicks off Dec. 10

The West End Electric Light Parade returns to Long Beach this holiday season on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. The fourth annual parade will showcase antique cars, fire trucks, floats and bicycles wrapped in decorative lights. It runs down Beech Street, from Nevada to New York avenues, and local businesses serve hot chocolate along the parade route.

“Back in 2012, after [Hurricane Sandy], looking down Beech Street was pretty devastating,” said organizer James Lynch. “And I thought, How could we do something for the kids and businesses? We started in 2013 with eight vehicles and a marching band. This year we’ll have 75 vehicles in the parade, as well as pipe bands, antique fire trucks and more.”

This year’s event coincides with the Chamber of Commerce’s window decorating contest, part of an effort to encourage residents and visitors to shop local. The parade is also part of an effort to attract visitors to local businesses in the West End.

“It’s a good night for the businesses and for the families who do shopping, and make reservations for dinner and make a whole night out of it,” Lynch said. “We look forward to seeing everybody at the parade.”
