Husband and wife team Michael and Kelly Hobbs became involved with Fitness 19 over a decade ago. Both were school teachers, enjoyed working out, and became fascinated with the concept behind the company. When an opportunity arrived, they quit their jobs and dove in. At one point, they owned four Fitness 19 centers. The Malverne location was launched in 2017, and Michael and Kelly Hobbs now own that and another Fitness 19 in New Jersey.
Fitness 19 is unique in that membership is highly affordable, endless options are offered for every age, ability and purpose, and its centers can be found in 17 states. Over 50 classes are offered each week. Day care is available six days a week. And quite unique is their HIIT (high intensity interval training) 360 room, which involves small group training, 45 minute workouts.
The 18,000 sq. ft. Malverne facility has two levels. The upper houses cardio, aerobics, resistance machines, and the Kid’s Room (daycare). The lower level features locker rooms with showers, free weights, a spin room with bikes, and the HIIT 360 room.
One-on-one trainers are available from early morning to evening. There are 15 nationally certified trainers on staff. Sessions are customized to the person’s needs, whether they are young and athletic, or elderly with physical limitations.
Classes abound, and depending on what you want and/or need (toning, strength, endurance, dance or just fun), you’ll find it. Pilates, Body Sculpt, Yoga, Zumba, Step It Up, TRX, Spin and others are all on the schedule. Seniors (65 and older) can enjoy SilverSneakers classes three times a week. Exercises, with the help of a chair for support, are done to music, designed to increase muscle strength, range of movement, and activities for daily living. Used are hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball for resistance.
Gym hours are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Day care is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon, and 4 to 8 p.m.; and on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Some classes, like Spin, where there are a set amount of bikes, require reservations.
