Long Beach firefighters battled a West Beech Street blaze on Sunday that sent clouds of smoke into the West End.

The Long Beach Fire Department rushed to a call for a house fire at 50 W. Beech St. at approximately 8:22 p.m., fire officials said.

Assistant Fire Chief Hadrick Ray was first on the scene, observed heavy smoke coming from the attic and transmitted a working house fire as firefighters entered the home, according to the Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Fire officials said that Engine 2343 was on the scene within minutes, and crews stretched the first hose line into the house, where the main body of fire was in the attic.

“The fire reportedly began from an out of control barbeque grill against the rear of the house,” Fire Chief Richard DiGiacomo told the Herald. “It spread through void space on the side of the house and traveled up to the attic.”

The Island Park Fire Department assisted at the scene, and the fire was under control within 20 minutes, officials said. A total of three hose lines were stretched into the home to extinguish the blaze; the second line was stretched by Engine 2344; and the third by Engine 2341.

The family escaped the home and no serious injuries were reported, although a firefighter was treated at the scene for an eye injury and an occupant of the home was transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital’s emergency department in Long Beach with an ankle injury, according to officials.

“The electric and the gas have been turned off and the occupants have been relocated,” Digiacomo said.
