LBFD battles East Penn Street blaze

More than 50 firefighters rushed to the scene of a house fire at 311 East Penn Street at around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, according to Long Beach Fire Chief Joseph Miller.

Firefighters observed heavy smoke and fire in the rear of the home, and on the first and second floors. Miller said the fire originated outdoors in the backyard area and made its way toward the house.

“Next to where the fire originated was a gas barbecue, so when it caught up to the barbecue, it was able to feed it more because of the gas and created a larger volume of fire which got to the deck and the house,” he said.

Mutual aid responded, including the Island Park Volunteer Fire Department, Atlantic Beach Rescue, the Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department, the Oceanside Fire Department, the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department and the Baldwin Fire Department.

Firefighters used four hose lines to extinguish the fire while others entered and searched the building for residents and vented the house, according to the department’s Facebook page.

The deck and an add-on room in the rear of the house sustained most of the damage, Miller said, but the inside of the house was also damaged.

All of the residents safely exited the house before firefighters arrived, Miller added. The Nassau County Fire Marshals came to the scene and deemed the cause of the fire to be electrical. No injuries were reported.
