A Long Beach Middle School student was struck and injured by a motorist on Lido Boulevard while riding his bike on his way to school Thursday morning.

According to Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department Chief Jared Siegelman, the student sustained minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital in stable condition by a Nassau County Police Department ambulance.

Police responded to the emergency call at 7:54 a.m. at the intersection of Lido Boulevard and Regent Drive, a NCPD spokesman said. Siegelman said the driver was reportedly making a turn onto Regent Drive when he hit the boy. A spokesman for Nassau County police said no criminal charges or violations were filed against the driver, who was not identified.

“The vehicle remained at the scene and the kid was conscious [when police arrived],” the NCPD spokesman said.

The incident sparked criticism by residents on Facebook, who said that Lido Boulevard has long been a dangerous thoroughfare for pedestrians and bicyclists. Many said that drivers often ignore the 20 mph speed limit in the school zone.

“The police in the area do the best they can, but some people don’t care,” Siegelman said.

Project 11561, a local community Facebook group, launched a Change.org petition moments after the student was struck calling for increased safety measures on Lido Boulevard. The petition currently has more than 400 signatures.
