NYSEA’s Surf Week returns to Long Beach

New York Surf Week returns to Long Beach next week, with five days full of surf, skate, music, movie, and art events.

Surf Week, presented by NYSEA, runs from July 11-15. The event has grown into a Long Beach staple — now in its ninth year, the week includes the open surf contest and the kids’ surf contest, open skateboard contests, open charity surf events, parties, an art show, surf movie premieres at the Long Beach movie theater, beach and boardwalk vendors, and concerts presented by NYSEA.

Surf Week co-founder Will Skudin, a professional big-wave surfer sponsored by Hurley, said that the event began in memory of his late friend, George “Geeza” Geiser, a venerated local surfer, and the event includes a memorial paddle out in his honor on July 14.

The open surfing contest features both professional and local surfers, and the event will also include outings with Surf for All, a local nonprofit organization that provides surfing opportunities for people with disabilities and special needs. Outings for blind and visually impaired students at The Henry Viscardi School will be held during the week, in addition to the Adaptive All-Stars Competition.
