Officer injured while apprehending Long Beach man

A Nassau County police officer was injured on Friday as he attempted to apprehend a Long Beach man who police said broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

Police said that 26-year-old Cesar Aponte-Villazan, of East State Street, confronted his former girlfriend after he broke into her East Atlantic Beach home on Mohawk Avenue on June 16 at 4:30 a.m. Police said he damaged the front door and window before he proceeded to destroy more property and personal belongings when he entered the home.

“Upon police arrival, officers attempted to place the defendant under arrest to which he resisted,” police said in a news release. “During that time, one officer sustained a dislocated elbow before the defendant was able to be placed into custody.”

The officer was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Police said that officers discovered a large amount of cocaine in Aponte-Villazan’s pocket.

He was charged with second-degree burglary, second-degree assault, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on June 17.
