Alan and Barbara Hartenstein, members of Temple Israel in Lawrence, Hewlett residents Jackie and Dr. Ron Kaminer, Lois and Marc Kemp and Pamela and Dr. Max Scheer, all of the Five Towns, along with Rockville Centre resident and Nassau County Planning Commissioner Jeffrey Greenfield were recognized by the United Jewish Appeal-Federation of New York with the organization’s Leadership awards at its inaugural South Shore dinner at the Seawane Country Club in Hewlett Harbor on Sept. 24.

Capt. Libby Weiss (res.), an expert on media coverage of Israel and an activist on the campaign for international legitimacy and the challenges of battling terrorists while the world watches, was the guest speaker. She is the head of international social media for the Israel Defense Forces.

The UJA-Federation of New York is considered the largest local charitable organization in the world. It raises money and designates those funds to fulfill a mission to “care for people in need, inspire a passion for Jewish life and learning and strengthen Jewish communities in New York, in Israel, and around the world,” according to its mission statement.

Ilene and Larry Cohen and Nancy and Alan Hoffman were the dinner chairs. Richard Grobman and Steven Kaufman were the South Shore executive committee chairs for what was called “an elaborate cocktail reception.”
