A sweet idea

“It would be nice to raise some money,” Paolucci said of Cupcakes for Comfort, “it’s also just nice to raise awareness and to have to a lot of people learn about what we do.”

Chemo Comfort donates kits to low-income patients through eight partner organizations including the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative at the Actors’ Fund, CancerCare, Charles B. Wang Community Health Center and St. John’s Hospital in Riverside, the Bronx. The organization is a five-time grantee of The Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan B. Komen for the Cure and has received foundation support from the Kite Key and Landegger Foundations.

According to Shapiro, many of The Sweet Peace’s employees have had family members who have battled cancer, which makes helping out Chemo Comfort even more special.

“It’s very emotional,” Shapiro said of assisting Chemo Comfort. “I also feel very honored that … my day-to-day dream is going to help people and bring more awareness.”

Leading up to the event, Shapiro added, The Sweet Peace received a lot of positive feedback through social media. She designed a special cupcake for the week that depicts a lotus blossom, which is also Chemo Comfort’s logo. The cupcakes, which, Shapiro said, take about 10 minutes each to make, will cost $5 and are vanilla with vanilla frosting, but there are also gluten and dairy-free options to accommodate everyone.
