Camps take kids out to the ballgame

Posted

Baseball’s All-Star break happened this week, but America’s pastime was still under way on local ball fields.

After 15 years of running weeklong baseball camps for children in Valley Stream and Lynbrook, Merrick resident Tony Lombardo is bringing the camps this summer to his hometown.

Lombardo, who retired this year as Valley Stream Central High School’s head varsity baseball coach, is offering “Valbrook Baseball Camps” in coming weeks in Merrick and Lynbrook. Valbrook camps already took place this month and last in Merrick and Valley Stream.

He runs the camps with Al Marrazzo, varsity baseball coach at Lynbrook High School and a teacher in the Lynbrook School District. Counselors are certified teachers and coaches, and college and high school players assist, Lombardo said. The camps are for children ages 5 to 14.

Participants will “learn the skills of baseball and have a great time,” Lombardo said. The camps “are a mixture of learning and fun.”

The Herald Life recently photographed the action at Merrick Road Park, where youngsters ran hitting, throwing, catching and base running drills.

Camps will be held

July 20 to 24, at Greis Park in Lynbrook.

July 27 to 31, at Greis Park in Lynbrook.

Aug. 3 to 7, at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick.
