Lynbrook Police warn against phone scam

Mayor William Hendrick and the Lynbrook Police Department are advising that there are numerous telephone scams occurring throughout Lynbrook.
The victim, usually an elderly person, will receive a telephone call from the IRS for back taxes or from a relative who has been arrested and needs bail. The caller will advise the victim that they need to send money and tells them to purchase Green Dot cards or other gift cards and to call back the given telephone number when they have been purchased.
When the victim calls back, the scammer will ask for the serial numbers that are on the cards. Once provided they immediately withdraw the funds off of the card. It is not retrievable.  In the cases where the relative has reportedly been arrested, the suspect will make a second call later in the day and report that the judge wants more money for the relatives release and to purchase more cards. Other telephone scams have involved overdue utility bills, and the kidnapping of a relative.
Please take note that the IRS, police departments and courts do not accept money through the use of Green Dot cards or any other gift cards over the telephone. Inform your relatives and friends of these scams and to not purchase these cards or any other gift cards to pay overdue utility bills, the IRS, Police Bail, Court Bail, Kidnapping Ransom or any other type of payment.  Instead they need to call the police.
