Election 2015 Nassau County Legislature District 7

Tova Plaut challenges Howard Kopel

Posted

Seeking his fourth two-year term as a county legislator, Howard Kopel is being challenged by fellow Five Towns resident Tova Plaut. Election Day is Nov. 3.

District 7 includes Lawrence, Cedarhurst, Woodmere, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, East Rockaway, Rockville Centre and Oceanside.

Nearly three years after Hurricane Sandy not one Community Reconstruction infrastructure project has yet to be completed. How can you help push this along?

Howard Kopel: I will continue advocating for solutions to problems created by Superstorm Sandy, including fixing the damage done to the county’s Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant. I am extremely gratified that my efforts have led to the Legislature’s approval of hundreds of millions of dollars towards the reconstruction and fortification of the plant following its almost total destruction during Sandy.

Tova Plaut: I think it’s outrageous that not even a single Community Reconstruction Program project has begun — much less been completed — three years after Sandy. Sandy’s impact continues to weigh over our community. As a legislator, I will fight to ensure our community can benefit from all available programs. After Sandy, I immediately came back to my community to lead food drives and try to help in any way I could. As a legislator, I will have more influence to fight for and protect our community. We need leadership that will advocate relentlessly for our community.

H: The county continues to experience fiscal problems. What are your ideas on how Nassau can shore up its finances and still provide needed services?

Kopel: Since assuming the majority in 2010, Republicans have reduced the number of county employees by 2,200, consolidated departments, reduced legal expenses, entered innovative public-private partnerships, and reformed the county’s tax certiorari practices. These initiatives have saved over $500,000,000.
