Everyone — and their neighbor — into the Lynbrook pool!

Village opens pool membership to 100 Rockville Centre families

Swimmers at the Village of Lynbrook Municipal Pool in Greis Park will see some new faces at the pool next year since the Village Board has announced that it will open the pool to 100 Rockville Centre families.

The decision was made after Rockville Centre residents, lead by resident Mary Beth Kearns, presented a petition for a public pool at the July 14 Rockville Centre Board of Trustees meeting. Mayor Francis X. Murray, who sought to reach an agreement to allow a limited number of Rockville Centre residents to use the pool, then contacted Lynbrook Mayor Bill Hendrick.

Two months later, the RVC village trustees informed the public that the two villages had found a temporary solution: 100 family memberships at Lynbrook’s town pool would be open to Rockville Centre residents for summer 2015.

In the meantime, Murray has asked Jack Matthews, the chair of the Citizens’ Budget Advisory Committee, to head a group of residents to research and study the feasibility of a Rockville Centre village pool, including a possible location, cost analysis, seasonal versus year-round, and more.

“There is a lot to do,” Murray said. “It’s going to take a while.”

One hundred family pool memberships would be open to Rockville Centre residents for the 2015 pool season. The memberships would cost $750 per family. In his letter, Hendrick also listed the activities available at the Lynbrook pool, including water aerobics, swimming lessons, and movie nights.

“It’s about $8 a day,” said Murray. “And that’s the whole family.”

Hendrick said that there were two driving factors in the Village’s decision to allow Rockville Centre residents to use the pool. “The pool right now does not pay for itself, it does cost the Village [of Lynbrook] some money. This will certainly help to defray those costs,” Hendrick said.

Hendrick also said that the agreement would give Lynbrook an opportunity to foster relations with Rockville Centre. “This also gives us a chance to work with another municipality and show what Lynbrook has to offer to outside residents,” he said.
