Thanks to a federally funded project to be conducted by Hempstead Town’s Department of Planning and Economic Development, a new handicapped-accessible ramp will be installed at East Rockaway American Legion Post 958. The new ramp will be built in compliance with the latest standards of the ADA (American with Disabilities Act

“Veterans have made the ultimate sacrifice for us, and projects like this are one more way in which we can express our gratitude,” said Town Supervisor Kate Murray.

Murray and Town Councilman Anthony Santino said that veterans at the East Rockaway American Legion will certainly benefit from the new ramp, as many of its dedicated members are elderly and/or have service-related injuries.

“Our veterans have done so much for our community and country, and I’m glad that this funding will assist our disabled veterans,” said Santino.

The bidding process for the project began this summer, and construction is expected to start in the near future. The total cost for the project is budgeted at $50,000.

“The East Rockaway American Legion is a staple of the community,” Murray said. “We’re happy to be able to help our veterans and other neighbors who utilize this important facility.”
