A little less politics, Al

To the Editior:
Al D’Amato’s column in the Mar. 7-13 issue, “Let’s have more action and less politics,” should have been titled, “Let’s have less of D’Amato’s politics and more facts.”
D’Amato puts his hands over his eyes like his fellow Republicans and complains, “Where is Obama’s proposal on what cuts need to be made?” Perhaps he should look at the President’s Budget for Fiscal Year 2013, which is currently posted on the Office of Management and Budget’s website (www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget).
D’Amato might learn that the president proposes $1 trillion in specific discretionary spending reductions, including $2.50 in cuts for every $1 in new revenue from people earning $250,000 or more per year — something his fellow Republicans won’t even begin to negotiate. D’Amato then misrepresents that “[Obama] got a new payroll tax” when the fact is that it wasn’t a new payroll tax, but a restoration of an Obama-proposed payroll tax stimulus reduction — originally opposed by most Republicans — and pushed by, yes, the Republicans, to be revoked as part of the “fiscal cliff” negotiations. And no, Mr. D’Amato, President Obama has not ignored the carried interest tax loophole. He has pushed to close it, except, once again, it is your Republican colleagues in Congress who have opposed closing it. So please, Mr. D’Amato, next time, how about less politics and more facts?
