Southern State Parkway needs safety fixes

To the Editor:
Many residents in my district are extremely concerned about the Nassau County section of the Southern State Parkway, notoriously dubbed “Blood Alley,” due to its dangerous curves and frequent accidents. I realize it is not plausible to rebuild the parkway, but something has to be done to mitigate the high number of accidents and deaths that occur here every year. This is a major artery on Long Island, and our constituents deserve safety when traveling.

Celebrate the songs of Ireland

To the Editor:
The first meeting of the year of the Irish Cultural Society recognizes the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916, a rebellion that stunned the world and led to the eventual establishment of Ireland as an independent nation.
The meeting will be held at the Garden City Library, at 60 7th St., across the street from the Garden City Hotel, on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
The program is titled “Songs and Stories of the Easter 1916 Uprising.” It was created and will be presented by Kevin Westley, the well-known host of the Irish music show on Hofstra radio, 88.7 FM. Kevin is a teacher of Irish dance and a competitor in song at Irish festivals. He placed first as an adult male singer in the AOH Nassau Feis in 2011, 2013 and 2014, and competed in the All Ireland Championship finals in 2015 in Sligo.
