Residents from Lynbrook and East Rockaway and beyond came out on May 17 for the annual Relay for Life event at Lynbrook South Middle School. The participants yielded nearly $48,000 for the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research.

During Relay For Life events, participants camp out and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event to represent that cancer never rests.

Some of the highlights of the event included the Survivor Lap where cancer survivors take the first lap around the track while other participants cheer them on. Also, the Luminaria Ceremony where glowing Luminaria, which bear the names of someone who has battled cancer line the track as a way to honor the community’s cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease.

According to the relayforlief.org website, 28 teams, and 173 participated.
