Nearly one hundred bowlers from Our Lady of Peace Parish participated in “Strikes for Sandy” at San-Dee Lanes in Malverne on December 29. This was a fundraiser for the Our Lady of Peace Hurricane Response Efforts. More than $1,800 was raised during the event. Our Lady of Peace coordinated a Hurricane Sandy response team immediately after the storm devastated the area.

Many parishioners have volunteered their time in various ways. With the support of Msgr. Bill Breslawski, Sr. Mary Dowden, Sr. Barbara Faber and Sr. Grace Monroe, they have helped many people in need and have directly assisted 10 families in East Rockaway, Long Beach, Island Park and Oceanside with home demolitions and debris removal. Among other efforts, they also helped Sacred Heart Parish in Island Park by cleaning out their Parish Center and preparing it for use as a polling site during the 2012 election. They collected and distributed thousands of dollars worth of food, cleaning supplies, toiletries, blankets and clothing to East Rockaway, Island Park, Far Rockaway and Long Beach. Volunteers served food and assisted at the Island Park and East Rockaway FEMA Stations on numerous occasions. Girl and Boy Scout Troops, Knights of Columbus and the Inc. Village of Lynbrook donated many items and coordinated with local toy drives. In addition to all of this, the parish raised more than $8,000 for Hurricane Sandy Rrelief, even before the “Strikes for Sandy” event.
