Positive signs for rebuilt Lynbrook

Despite losing eight vital contributors from last year’s 12-win team that qualified for the Nassau Class B girls’ lacrosse playoffs, Lynbrook has been impressive in the early going while splitting four solid efforts.

“We’ve come a long way in a month,” coach Vincent Tetro said. “We’re inexperienced and had a lot of holes to fill. I had two games circled on the calendar, Plainedge and South Side, and we were so close to winning both. I think the girls realize they can play with anyone in the conference.”

The Lady Owls let one slip away April 5, falling 14-13 to visiting South Side in overtime after leading by five at halftime, a week after beating Plainedge, 13-11. Junior attack Molly Carter netted six goals in each game.

“We have to shake off the South Side loss,” Tetro said. “We played an outstanding first half, but our inexperienced showed in the second half. They were like a train we couldn’t stop.

“Beating Plainedge was eye-opening,” he added. “It gave us a huge confidence boost.”

Sophomore Sophia LoCicero, who stepped into a full-time starting role in the midfield, scored five times against Plainedge. Sophomore goaltender Hope Germanakos made 10 saves and didn’t allow a goal over the final six minutes. Carter had the game-winner with 4:30 remaining.

“Molly’s on another level,” Tetro said of Carter, who last season recorded 52 goals and 31 assists and was named Honorable Mention All-County. “Every team is going to base its gameplan around her. She’s a big-time scorer and we’ll move her all over the field.”

Through four games, Carter had 20 goals and nine assists. LoCicero, who Tetro believes could be primed for a breakout campaign, had 15 goals and seven assists. “Sophia’s taking the ball to the cage really hard and is growing into a leadership role,” Tetro said. “She has great athleticism and field vision. I think her strong start will continue.”
