The 2015 graduation ceremony at East Rockaway High School on June 25 was a spirited event that sent off 102 seniors into the world of higher education, service, and the workforce.

The event was marked by a proud list of colleges that our students are attending, including Valedictorian, Diana Sharkey, who will attend Yale University, and Salutatorian, Courtney Jackson, who will attend the Honors program at Binghamton State University.

Other notable schools that students are headed to are UNC-Chapel Hill, Lehigh, Colgate, University of Miami, Seton Hall and Marist.  Some students will also be attending local schools such as Molloy, Nassau Community College, Hunter College, and Farmingdale.

Students were treated to speeches by Superintendent of Schools Lisa Ruiz, who spoke about the importance of embracing failure; Senior Class Advisors Val Buscema and Ginny Sievers,  who addressed the “sky full of stars” — as her seniors were known in this year’s hallway decoration contest; James DeTommaso, who spoke about the value of perseverance; and Principal Joe Spero who posed the question from poet Mary Oliver “What will you do with your one wild and precious life?”

“This group is one that will be remembered for its incredible spirit of togetherness and support, as well as its achievements and standard it has set for future graduates,” said Principal Spero. “We wish the best of luck to all graduates and their families.”
