South Middle School emphasizes online safety

Posted

Students at Lynbrook’s South Middle School received a valuable lesson in online safety, thanks to a presentation led by Social Worker Rosanne Bogard.

Bogard explained how the Internet has drastically changed the way that children interact with the world. She specifically addressed issues such as cyber bullying, online predators, protecting privacy and the impact of social media. Students learned that they should turn off their GPS settings on mobile devices, avoid revealing personal information online and be cautious when posting to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the like. They were advised to “think before you click” in order to prevent social media content from affecting future college, internship, scholarship and job opportunities.

If students feel that they are being bullied, Ms. Bogard recommends that they do not respond and instead report it and save any evidence.

“If they see something, they should say something,” she encouraged.
