Lynbrook High School students earn top honors from Long Island Press

Staff members of Lynbrook High School’s school newspaper Horizon won a total of 21 awards at the Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards and Dinner, hosted by Hofstra University. The Lynbrook students competed across a variety of areas with young journalists from over 30 Long Island high schools.

Skyler Kessler, also a Herald freelance photographer, swept the Single Photo category and also took home first and third-place awards in the Sports Photo category. A first-place award went to the team of Dana Fader, Bari Schechter and Samantha Sitt for Best Page Layout. The same team took third place for Best Overall Layout. The team of Hania Mahmood and Kerianne McManus took first place in Science and Health. Molly Schiff won a first-place award in the Local Feature category.

SoEun Lee took home two second-place awards in the Education/Local Issues and Science and Health categories. Other second-place awards went to Erica DeMichiel in Storytelling, Ana Gutierrez in Arts Review and Molly Schiff in Arts and Entertainment.

Taking home third-place honors were Angela Schickling for an opinion piece and Tali Zingman for a school feature.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Emma Cohen in the General Opinion category and Zach Pekale for a sports special section. Honorable mentions also went to Charley Lanter for reporting on Newtown and to Kerianne McManus and Maggie Neal for their reporting on Hurricane Sandy.
