These girls are real Titans

Lynbrook self-defense team completes 16 seasons

The Lynbrook Titans Girl’s Self Defense program recently completed its 16th season. The program is for young girls in the community ages 6 through 14.

There are three main areas of focus. First and foremost is awareness: being and acting aware when they are on their own is very important for their personal safety.

Second is fitness: the program instills in the girls the importance of exercise, eating properly, and getting a proper amount of sleep at night.

Lastly is self-defense: The girls are taught to first walk away and or run away — depending on the situation — to get help. But, as a last resort, they are taught how to defend themselves with some very simple, basic, and safe moves.

“This program is always a pleasure for me, and to work with the young ladies in our community, and do my best to prepare them for the real world,” said Titans president Hilary Becker. “Our focus is on personal safety and fitness. However, we’ve found that there are several other excellent benefits for the young ladies including improved self-confidence, self esteem, self discipline, and courage. On behalf of the coaches and myself, it’s a great honor to be able to bring these benefits to the young ladies in the program, and I know that they’re better for the experience.”
