Girl Scout Troop 2182 will be hosting a yard sale to benefit the troop and the Michelle O’Neill Foundation on Sept. 9.

“We have a lot of toys, we have a lot of brand new items,” said Wendy Sirchia, one of the troop’s leaders. “It’s a good opportunity to get rid of things.”

Funds from the yard sale will help the girls, who are between 9- and 10-years-old, earn their Bronze Awards and fund any expenses that arise as the scouts try to earn their badges. A lemonade stand will also be set up to raise funds for the Michelle O’Neill Foundation, a Long Beach-based nonprofit that seeks to benefit children with cancer and special needs.

“I think it’s incredibly kind and generous of them,” said Carol O’Neill, the founder of the foundation.

According to its website, the foundation’s mission is to “provide financial assistance and relief to families who are facing the economic and emotional stresses associated with caring for a child with a catastrophic illness and to support oncology organizations that serve them.”

Sirchia said she decided to fundraise for the Michelle O’Neill Foundation because “it’s a worthy cause.”

The yard sale is scheduled for Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 179 Rhame Ave., East Rockaway.
