Mains running the entirety of Hempstead Avenue scheduled for replacement

Water mains running the entirety of Hempstead Avenue in Malverne will be replaced this year, along with mains under several smaller streets, a New York American Water representative told the Herald on Tuesday.

Water mains on Hempstead Avenue, which runs 5,800 feet from its northeast corner at Atlas Court, to its southern corner at Franklin Avenue, would be replaced between August and October of this year.

Mains running under Silver Street, from Cornwell Avenue to Atlas Avenue and measuring approximately 500 feet, would be replaced between June and July. Approximately 1,000 feet of water main on Atlas Avenue, from Gold Place to Dogwood Avenue, would be replaced during the same time.

Mains running under St. Thomas Place, from Linder Place to Hempstead Avenue, measuring 725 feet, would be replaced between July and August.

Pipes running along Hempstead Avenue will be replaced with 12-inch mains, while smaller streets will be get eight-inch mains.

The water main replacement schedule adds up to a little more than 8,000 feet of new pipe in the village this year.
