Stepping Out

Halloween is afoot

Where to find ghoulish, ghostly fun

The Halloween spirit is everywhere. There’s plenty to see and do in preparation for next Friday’s candyfest. Stop by one of the many festivals nearby in your Halloween best and get spooked if you dare. Here’s a roundup of where to go.

Spooky Fest
Creatures of all kinds inhabit the woods, and ghosts and ghouls come out to play at Tanglewood Preserve, home to the Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL), in Rockville Centre. The event, which takes over the preserve’s 16 acres this weekend and next, offers a spirited fun-filled slate of activities, both scary and not so scary, to appeal to all ages and fright levels. The wooded paths are transformed for Halloween, with eerie lighting, special effects and characters along the way. Creatures of all kinds inhabit the woods, drawing visitors into the eerie paths.
Whether you are looking to be spooked or not, the choice is yours. For those looking for a haunting good time, the Haunted Woods, a Spooky Fest favorite, is sure to thrill. Follow a quarter mile hike where the woods come to life as you search for a group of missing hikers who have entered and never returned. The dimly-lit walk is not for the faint of heart —with ghosts, monsters and the undead lurking in the dark shadows of the night.
Spooky Fest’s Maze of Zombies is a twisted puzzle filled with zombies who are thirsty for blood. This terrifying haunt will leave you screaming for your life and clawing at the walls for an exit, according to its creators. There is only one way out, so no turning back.
As always, a not-so-spooky walk is offered for younger children, where the kids will meet friendly ghosts and other charming Halloween characters. There are also 40 or so live animals to see (CSTL’s permanent residents) — snakes, turtles, goats, owls, and so much more. Other activities include holiday-themed arts and crafts, and the return of the Mystic Den, with a fortuneteller and face painting. And be on the lookout for the band of “Merry Monsters” who will be wandering through the courtyard.
